Why Die Maintenance Matters
Automotive stamping dies represent a significant capital investment. Proper maintenance can extend die life from 500,000 to over 2 million strokes while maintaining part quality and minimizing downtime.
Daily Inspection Checklist
Before each production run, inspect:
- Punch and die clearances: Check for wear or chipping
- Spring condition: Verify return force and travel
- Guide pins and bushings: Look for galling or excessive play
- Scrap chute: Clear any material buildup
Preventive Maintenance Schedule
Hailong Group recommends this maintenance cycle for automotive body panel dies:
- Every 50,000 strokes: Clean and lubricate all moving parts, measure critical dimensions
- Every 200,000 strokes: Inspect and sharpen cutting edges, replace worn wear plates
- Every 500,000 strokes: Full disassembly, refinish critical surfaces, replace springs and fasteners
Common Die Problems and Solutions
Burr formation: Indicates dull cutting edges. Regrind punch and die with proper clearance (typically 8-12% of material thickness).
Springback variation: Check for worn pressure pads or weakened nitrogen cylinders. Verify blank holder force.
Galling on draw surfaces: Improve lubrication and check die surface finish (Ra 0.2-0.4 μm recommended).
Storage and Handling
When dies are not in production:
- Apply corrosion inhibitor to all machined surfaces
- Store in climate-controlled environment (below 60% humidity)
- Support die sections properly to prevent distortion
- Tag with last inspection date and stroke count
