How to Evaluate an Automotive Stamping Die Supplier: A Buyer’s Checklist

A body panel die set is a large investment, and the supplier you choose decides whether your launch runs on time. Price matters, but most problems with stamping dies come from weak design, poor measurement or a rushed tryout, not from the quote. This checklist covers what to look at when you audit a die supplier, and shows how Qingdao Hailong Machinery Group answers each point.

1. Experience with your kind of part

Ask what the supplier builds every day. Outer panels, inner panels and structural sheet metal parts need different skills. Ask for examples of similar parts and the vehicle programs they supported. Hailong’s mold unit is mainly engaged in the design and production of cold stamping dies for automobile body panels and sheet metal parts, has more than 20 years of mold development, and has worked with dozens of domestic automobile manufacturers. It is a member unit of the China Die & Mould Industry Association and was named a key backbone enterprise for automobile panel molds.

2. A defined design and planning process

A good supplier can show you its process on paper. At Hailong, every project goes from quotation and contract to quality management planning, which covers the mold design process, the process programming process, the processing and assembly process, and the mold test and delivery process. Ask how die design reviews are held, who signs off the process layout, and how design changes from your side are recorded.

3. Machining capacity for large dies

Body panel dies are big and heavy, so check that the shop can machine them in-house rather than subcontracting the critical work. Look at machine travel, spindle speed and how many machines are free for your job. Hailong’s equipment includes a ZKMP gantry machine with 2,300 x 1,600 x 800 mm stroke for large mold parts, a 1614 high-speed machine at 20,000 rpm for fine inserts, vertical machining centers, a horizontal machining center with 1,600 x 1,300 x 1,300 mm travel, EDM and four wire EDM machines, and grinders.

4. Measurement you can trust

Measurement is how you know the die and the panel match the CAD data. Ask what is used to check die surfaces and panels, and ask to see a real measurement report. Hailong uses a large laser three-coordinate measuring machine and handheld 3D scanning with CAD comparison, and it also builds checking fixtures so the stamped part can be checked the same way on your line.

5. Tryout presses and stamping experience

A die is only proven when it makes good panels in a press. Ask whether tryout is done in-house and on what presses. Hailong has mechanical and hydraulic presses and a large mould tryout press, and the group runs its own production stamping lines, including an 8,250-ton closed automatic line and a 3,400-ton automatic line. A supplier that stamps parts itself understands what your press shop will face after buy-off. Read more about die tryout and buy-off.

6. Quality system and inspection points

Check certificates and how they show up in daily work. Hailong is certified to IATF 16949, ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001. Its quality plan includes incoming inspection of raw materials, inspection during production, product monitoring and handling of nonconforming products, with controlled records and documents behind the production plan.

7. Project management and communication

Ask who your single contact will be, how often you receive progress reports, and how open issues are tracked to closure. Hailong offers one-stop service from quality and planning control through order and project management to delivery, installation and commissioning.

FAQ

Should I visit the supplier before ordering?
For a first body panel program, yes. Seeing the machining, measurement and tryout areas tells you more than any presentation.

Is it better to buy dies and checking fixtures from one supplier?
It often saves time, because the die and the fixture are built from the same data and checked against each other. See why stamped parts need checking fixtures.

What documents should I ask for?
A die design review record, the process layout, machining and measurement reports, tryout panel reports and the buy-off record.

Where can I learn how the dies are built?
Read how automotive stamping dies are made and the die line behind a body panel.
